Summer’s (almost) here! What, you hadn’t noticed? No matter what the British weather has in store, there are very few delights better than a summer-inspired smoothie. Whether you’re looking for an alternative to classic cocktails, a delicious dessert smoothie or something to put you in/back in that holiday mood, rest assured that it’s near impossible to get these wrong – just make sure you never forget the lid, unless you’re interested in becoming a YouTube sensation for all the wrong reasons!

To get you started, here are some refreshing, revitalising recipes that get a big thumbs up from The Leisure Lounge team.

Sun-kissed Strawberry Banana Blast

Ideal as a special breakfast treat, this sweet and refreshing mix will give you a great reason to get out of bed in the morning!

You’ll need:

300g Greek-style natural yoghurt (try the fat free option – you’ll never know the difference)

Around 10 good-sized strawberries

Two pretty strawberries (for garnish)

Three large ripe bananas

A splash of milk

Optional *ahem* Amaretto

Get smooth:

  • If you don’t mind getting messy, use your hands to break the bananas into chunks, or use a knife if preferred
  • Slice the strawberries in half and remove any stems or leaves, keeping the prettiest two strawberries aside
  • Add the strawberries, bananas and Greek-style yoghurt into the smoothie jug
  • Whizz it up for around a minute. Add a splash of milk and give it a final thirty-second blend
  • Pour into two glasses and add a strawberry to the side of each glass for a final finishing touch
  • For the grown-up version add a generous dash of Amaretto – it blends perfectly with the delicious fruity flavour

Pina Smoothada

Haven’t managed to book your sizzling summer getaway just yet? Don’t worry! This smooth twist on the much-loved holiday cocktail will transport you right there.

You’ll need:

250g fresh pineapple chunks

250ml coconut milk or cream of coconut

One frozen banana

Ice cubes

Optional *ahem* white rum

Get smooth:

  • You’ll need to slice and freeze a banana the night before
  • Keep the pineapple fresh in the fridge so it’s nice and cool – this smoothie tastes so much better ice cold
  • Put all the other ingredients in the blender and blitz it for a minute minimum to ensure it’s nice and creamy
  • Drop in a few ice cubes and give it another mix up
  • If you’re making this for adults, a generous splash of white rum will bring this to life

Apple Pie Delight

If you’re calorie counting, this recipe definitely isn’t for you, but if you’re looking for a one-off spectacular sweet treat then you’ve hit the jackpot.

You’ll need:

300g of your favourite vanilla ice cream

3 tbsp apple sauce

One apple

3 tsp brown sugar

½ tsp ground cinnamon

Optional *ahem* bourbon

Get smooth:

  • Peel the apple and slice and dice into small chunks
  • Blitz the apple in the blender – you want the chunks as small as possible
  • Add all the ingredients and give it a good whirl until it’s thick and creamy
  • Add more sugar if it’s not quite sweet enough and then serve in two tall glasses
  • Sprinkle a little cinnamon on top to finish
  • You can also leave this mix in the freezer for an appetising apple pie ice cream to enjoy the next day

Happy smoothie-making!
